What Affects Your Food Choices?

Have you ever thought why you make the food choices you do? Perhaps it's the only food available in the present time. Hunger may be a reason. Is it because you feel sad and depressed, or lonely and bored?

There are many physical and emotional reasons why you eat what you eat.

Food is associated with many kinds of feelings. A baby first knows about love through food. Birthdays and holidays are days with special food. Some people feel their spirits lifted when they have a dish of ice cream. Ordering familiar foods in restaurants gives one a feeling of security in knowing generally how the food will taste.

Many persons tend to eat according to already established family patterns and traditions. With the fast paced life many families lead, meals may be kept simple. More elite meals are saved for holidays. Certain foods may be considered for certain days, such as taco Tuesdays and pizza on Friday.

Religious and ethnic beliefs of individuals may direct food choices. For example, Muslims and Jews do not eat pork. Other religions place restrictions on eating meat. Many Roman Catholics continue to eat fish on Fridays despite meat is allowed except during Fridays in Lent. Some families practice meatless Mondays as a humanitarian effort.

There are many other forces in the world around us that affect what we eat. Where you live may determine what you can grow, or buy, or have available. Are there stores in your area that carry fresh fruits and vegetables? Have weather patterns affected the fruit crop, or other crops? Modern technology has provided us with a great selection of foods grown and produced.

Organic farming has been a healthy topic of debate lightly, powered by two schools of thought. One that propagates this is a healthy, safe and improved farming method and the other that argues there's more bad than good in it. So, who do we count on? While it is still the subject of an in depth research, let's have a look at the different aspects of organic farming (positive and negative sides) to understand why it has been making headlines these days.


Organic farming has been defined in different ways by food suppliers, intellectuals, environmentalist and critics. So, the topic has a wider perspective. In general, it means using the alternative farming methods in growing food crops. What's good about it?

  • It is labor intensive and a farmer can produce more crops relying on industrial methods than organic ones.
  • A great deal of skill is required to practice this. A farmer should spend time and apply thought observation to alter the existing farming system and addressing the problems.

Besides the above, there are many other disadvantages organic farming comes with. While consumers are becoming more organic-minded, critics are researching the aspects that do not make it a healthy farming practice. Organic Arable Farming

Organic arable farming reduces the environmental health issues created by intensive farming practices. Organic farming methods avoid the destruction of soil and reverse the negative impacts of intensive farming. For example, you will improve environmental health, directly improve the health of your land, and improve your own health – if you eat the products you farm – by following these four arabable farming practices:

  1. Crop rotation
  2. Planning for biodiversity on the lands farmed

Farming organically includes growing diverse types of crops, at varied times. (You can use organic farming techniques on a smaller scale in your organic vegetable garden.) It needs to be well aerated (recognize the importance of worms and what worms eat). Crop planting needs to consider biodiversity maintenance and / or building. Organic farming is opposed to relying on chemicals for pesticides and / or fertilizer. Organic farming relationships on natural strategies, such as ladybugs – as opposed to pesticides – which eat aphids, scale, mites and more, to reduce pests (if releasing ladybugs in your farm or garden; use about 10 to 18 ladybugs per 100 square feet of planted crops). Be careful to buy natural, healthy ladybugs (some can be infected with parasites). Organic arable farming also treats on using mixed farming methods versus chemical fertilizers.

Commercial farming operations use herbicides, pesticides and plant growth hormones to grow their fruit and vegetables. Organic arable farming operations use crop and livestock production methods that are more than just choosing not to use certain pesticides, fertilizers, genetically modified organisms, antibiotic, coloring, artificial additives, growth hormones and more. Natural weed management practices and natural pest control programs are tactics used on organic farms.

Organic arable farming promotes crop rotations and cover crops, and foci on balanced 'host to predator' relationships. Cover crops, composted manure, and other plant matter, also known as green manure, and animal manure are recycled back to the soil and used to improve and maintain soil fertility. Livestock on organic farms are fed 100% organically grown grains, forages and protein supplements.

The main reasons farmers grow organically are concerns about the effects of chemicals on health, the effects of conventional farming on soil quality and conservation, and the overall effects of chemicals and conventional farming on sustainable, environmental health. Organic farmers are concerned about the environment and the role they play in its health. These farmers view organic farming as part of the solution, rather than the problem, of modern agriculture. Their goals are to:

  • Protect the environment
  • Minimize soil degradation
  • Minimize soil erosion
  • Minimize pollution
  • Increase and maintain soil fertility
  • Improve global biodiversity
  • Reduce, reuse and recycle organic materials through composting, replanting, re-design and other environmentally-positive techniques
  • Maximize health of livestock, naturally, and minimize disease and issues related to unsound farming practices
  • Use renewable and sustainable resources in organic farming and try to market products locally to minimize environmental impacts.

The benefits of organic farming are not only in the healthier foods but also in the reduction of environmental health issues. In addition to these achieving these goals, the benefit to organic arable farming is to produce fruit, vegetables and meats that are much tastier and healthier.

Carrageenan Is Linked to Inflammation

What is carrageenan? It's a controversial food additive, allowed in many "organic" food products. It is a common practice for non-organic but essential ingredients to find their way into organic foods. An example would be baking powder in organic baked products as a typical example of one essential non-organic ingredient. Since there are alternatives like locust bean gum or guar gum, carrageenan would seem a nonessential ingredient.

Yet carrageenan did find its way into organic foods due to misinformation provided by corporate scientists and some successful lobbying by carrageenan manufacturers and food processors convicting organic consumers that it was both a safe and essential ingredient. Food industry athletes and lobbyists have influence over which non-organic essential ingredients can be added to organic products.

Every five years these non-organic essential ingredients are revisited and any new information reviewed by the board. If continued use of a particular ingredient is found to threaten human health or the environment or in the mean time a better (which may mean cheaper) alternative has been found it may removed from the list of acceptable for inclusion into organic foods. However, it appears for some reason this has not happened in the case of carrageenan?

Most people know that there are many additives in food products that cause harm so what the big fuss about carrageenan being used in foods, certainly it's just one of many. The big deal for me (as a naturopath) and many people, is that buying organic products means no nasty additives like those found in non-organic food products. Now this situation raises doubt that now we do need to worry about what's being approved as acceptable additions to organic foods? In the case of carrageenan, approved again for another 5 years, back in 2012.

The unique chemical structure of carrageenan seems to trigger an immune response in the body. This immune response leads to inflammation. The severity of a reaction to a particular ingredient will depend on how sensitive each person is. For instance some like me react quite badly to MSG (monosodium glutamate) others may have a slight reaction and some feel nothing. If you consume carrageenan on a regular basis it may very well set up a constant inflammatory reaction.

Inflammation caused by any substance in our food or drinks bought to be of concern to us, as a prolonged inflammatory response can and does lead to more serious diseases. The link between infection and disease has been well documented for many years now, with conditions like bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, cancer and much more.

So what is carrageenan? What is it used for? It comes from seaweed which has gone through some intensive processing. It adds bulk, it's a binder and a thickening agent, found in many products like ice-cream, non-dairy milk, coffee creamers, chocolate and much more.

On a separate note carrageenan is added to the water firemen use to put out fires. It makes water foam up smothering the fire, extinguishing it with less water, better for the environment and generally less water damage. What a great use of this compound, I am guessing it would be more eco-friendly than using a chemical foaming-agent.

As for the food products you buy start reading labels more carefully, even if you eat organic products. Your health is in your hands you can not rely on the food industry, lobbyists, or health organizations to look out for your health.

Out of Africa: Native Foods

Northern Africa is comprised of several countries, particularly Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Mauritania, Libya and Egypt. Clearly its foods have been influenced over the centuries by the ancient Phoenicians (a Semitic civilization now modern-day Tunisia) who introduced sausages and wheat, and Berber nomads who adapted the semolina from wheat, creating couscous which has become a main staple. Fast forward a few centuries, and you have the Arabs bringing a variety of savory spices, like cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves and saffron. From the New World, chilies, tomatoes and potatoes appeared, with lamb as a primary meat. (For you old movie buffs, Casablanca is Morocco's chief port and the location where Humphrey Bogart's character owned a bar.) These very foreign and strange-sounding foods make up a major of dishes and regional cuisine:

Chermoula: a mixture of herbs, oil, lemon juice, pickled lemons, garlic, cumin, and salt, used as a marinade and relish;

Couscous: popular in many countries (including the US) as a rice and potato substitute, made from steamed and dried durum wheat;

B'stilla: also known as pastilla, is Moroccan in origin, dating back to the eighth century; generally a sweet and sour pigeon pie, or made with chicken or quail. onions and spices like saffron and coriander, almonds and beaten eggs, wrapped up in thin warqa pastry that becomes crispy when cooked; (a main course and dessert all-in-one)

Tajine: a famous Berber dish, named for the pot in which it is cooked; your basic slow-cooked stew with meat, veggies, spices and dried fruit;

Shakshouka: a Tunisian dish, sometimes called chakchouka, also enjoyed in Israel and believed to have originated with Maghrebi Jews; served at any meal, containing chopped onions, chili peppers, tomatoes and cumin, until it has formed a thick sauce, topped with poached eggs;

Ful Medame: the national dish of Egypt and a popular street food in Cairo and Giza, containing cooked fava beans, then served with vegetable oil and cumin, garlic, onions, peppers and hard boiled eggs, dating back to Egypt in the fourth century;

L'hamd Marakad: the pickled lemon, an essential ingredient in Moroccan cooking, one the main ingredients in salads and plates of vegetables or flavored chicken dishes; fermented with lemon juice and salt for a month;

M'hanncha: sometimes known as the 'Moroccan snake' cake, (mercifully not made with actual snake) It derives its name from filo dough filled with a sweet almond paste, roled and flavored with orange water and cinnamon, then cooked;

Harira: a soup always eat during the Holy Month of Ramadan, when a fast is broken at sunset, usually a snack or appetizer;

Matbucha: another small dish, native to Israel, Syria and North Africa, your basic cooked tomatoes and peppers, spiced up and served with bread and olives; surprisingly, tomatoes did not arrive until the early nineteenth century, bought by the British Consul in Aleppo;

Mhadjeb: also called mahjouba, is a staple of Algerian cooking and a common street food, sometimes called Algerian crepes, filled with a paste of tomatoes and chopped cooked vegetables; if you utter "take me to the Casbah" you are likely to encounter these crepes, and who knows what else, so it's best not to kid around;

Mechoui: the traditional North African meat, a whole lamb roasted on a spit or in a pit, served with flat exports, dips and yogurt;

Mrouzia: a dish traditionally served during the Eid al-Adha festival in Morocco. a very specific type of tajine, made with lamb;

Authentic Northern African restaurants are pretty scarce, especially outside of major cities, but well worth the adventure should you be lucky enough to find one. Expanding our knowledge of different cuisines may be out of our comfort level but certainly worth a try. So if you have the opportunity, take advantage.
