Organic and "Healthy" Food Pricing Misconceptions

Recently at my local IGA, organic bananas were $ .69 / lb while conventional bananas were $ .59 / lb. This increased my weekly banana purchase by $ .22. Whole-wheat pasta was $ 1.38 / lb and white pasta was $ 1.00 / lb; the difference in price for a single meal would be only about $ .25. Organic Gala apples by the bag were exactly the same price as conventional Gala apples at $ 1.79 / lb. Organic and conventional celery hearts were exactly the same price. Organic romaine lettuce hearts were on sale for $ 1.99 / pound while Dole romaine hearts were $ 2.99.

Walmart carries plenty of organic vegetables at good prices. However, until I finally asked what day they were stocked and started coming then, I found their organic vegetables were too tired-looking. Other big regional grocers near my home also have good prices on organic foods. I have noticed that the grokers that stock the organic vegetables next to their conventional kin (all carrots together, all zucchini together, etc.) instead of in a separate "organic" section have better prices. I've also noticed that the grocers in the better neighborhoods have better organic prices.

My local grocer has "artisan" whole grain breads for $ 5.29 / lb, but I can get the same bread for $ 2.49 / lb at the Panera bakery or $ 3.79 / lb at Kroger, and it's not day-old either. For nutrition, the artisan breads at $ 2.49 / lb are a much better value than cheap white bread.

Lean meat is another area where you can buy for less than you might think. However, organic meat prices are still often 200% or more of conventional. Yes, extra lean ground turkey is $ 5.29 / lb, but purely lean ground turkey (92% or 93% lean) is only $ 2.79 / lb, which is the same price as the 85% lean ground beef a few feet further down the meat cooler . I once experimented with cooking down a pound of regular ground beef and a pound of ground sirloin at 92% lean. Once I poured off the grease, I had paid almost the same price per pound for the actual protein that was left. So, I buy ground sirloin in bulk when it is on sale, cook it the same day, and freeze it in one-pound bags for easy use in recipes.

You'll find great prices on fresh vegetables at farmer's markets, especially at the end of the day. And our town even has a winter farmer's market, where you get many of the "staple" vegetables (carrots, cabbages, squash, onions, etc. for excellent prices plus a lot of fresh herbs, cheeses and meats. our organic winter market than the summer one, but it's still expensive. Cheeses are usually pretty competitive around here though. Most organized farmer's market vendors can accept WIC coupons; they'll have signs posted if they do. Just Google "farmer's market" and the name of your town.

What if you can not even imagine spending $ 1 on romaine salad for two people when you could keep four people full for $ 1 worth of white pasta? Please go visit your local food pantry. They want you to eat better, and they have what you need to do it. Many grocer and bakeries donate their day-old bread and extra vegetables. You've been surprised what you can find there.

During most summers, we join a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm share. I calculated that the prices per pound for our share of those organic vegetables were even less than the conventional vegetables at the grocer. All of a sudden food could be transported from one area or country to another. Roast lamb from New Zealand became a delicacy in England. It was fashionable to serve exotic imported food to impress the guests.

Fast food . Then junk hit the scene big time. The origins of the hamburger have been put through the meat grinder with many claiming to have invented it. And it became trendy so people flocked in that direction and burger joints sprung up all over the place.

People went from eating organic food to chowing-down on what Jamie Oliver exposed as MacDonald's pink slime that processed meat unfit for human consumption into burgers. Yum.

Then there is the hot dog. Basically it is the scrapings of the abattoir floor stuffed into a condom with enough preservatives so they ever forever.

How Is Organic Chocolate Different?

Organic chocolate products begin with growing and harvesting cocoa according to organic methods.

The Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA) of 1990 and regulations in Title 7, Part 205 of the Code of Federal Regulations define and govern "organic" production. This pertains to foods grown anywhere that are imported into the United States. These regulations seek to promote an integrated approach to growing and harvesting, which preserves natural ecosystems while at the same time prohibiting the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Organic production methods have the added benefit of fostering sustainable conditions by preserving natural resources (for example, a tropical rainforest).

In the United States, "100% Organic" means all the ingredients are produced in accordance with organic methods. For a product to be legally labeled "Organic", at least 95% of its ingredients must be organic. A product can be "Made With Organic Ingredients" if at least 70% of its content is organic. "Certified Organic" means a product must be grown and manufactured in accordance with specified standards determined by the country where the product is sold. Thus, "Certified Organic" means different things in different countries and is not necessarily a guarantee that the product is pesticide free.

The EPA regulates food products sold in the United States that have been exposed to pesticides. For chocolate (non-organic) made from imported cocoa, the EPA allows up to certain levels of pesticide residue in the cocoa powder. Among these chemicals are Methyl Bromide, Pyrethrins, Hydrogen Cyanide, Naled, and Glyphosate. The EPA bans Lindane as a treatment on food cops, however trace quantities have been found in some European chocolate products. The US Food and Drug Administration works to see that chemical contaminants within imported food products do not exceed the levels set by the EPA. These chemicals are hazardous to crop pests, but are deemed acceptable for human consumption at some level.

So, why are chemical fertilizers and pesticides used anyway? The answer lies in how each producer evaluates the balance between the cost of using chemical fertilizers and pesticides and the yield of product obtained. Natural pests compromise and lower harvest yield, thereby decreasing profits. Chemical fertilizers have the initial benefit of maximizing yield per acre.

Many cocoa producers rely heavily upon chemical pesticides and fertilizers to boost and maintain crop production. Cocoa pods are one of the world's most heavily sprayed food crops. The use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers is controversial because of its adverse effects on human cultivators and harvesters, on surrounding vegetation and ecosystems, on other non-production related species, and on soil and local water.

There are also longer-term consequences to consider. High yield plants replace natural rainforest with income producing crops. Long-term focus on production has had the unintended consequence of tending towards limiting biodiversity, making producing species less resistant to pests and disease. As trees become less resistant over time due to limited genetic diversity, producers tend to become more reliant on chemical pesticides to protect crop yield.

As a consumer of chocolate products, your purchases equate to your vote as to how cocoa is cultivated and harvested. There is no right or wrong, but there is a choice. Buying organic chocolate does not guarantee that the upstream producer will support sustainable production methods. Buying organic does, however, send a clear message to the retailer that you choose to spend your money on organic products. Ultimately, consumer demand drives the worldwide market and shapes the choices producers make.

While it is true that organic products are not genetically modified, it does not prove that it has more nutrition as the conventionally grown products. It does not connote that consuming them will give more benefits than the latter. There are organic products that are high in glucose, lactose and sucrose. Some are also rich in calories, fat and salt. To ensure you and your family's health, there is a need to read nutritional facts in the label of the product before purchasing them. For sure, all products sold in the market bears that label and they passed quality assurance of the Bureau of Foods.

Furthermore, the two products, organic and conventionally grown, have the same quality and safety standards. However, organic products will spoil faster because they are not treated with preservatives unlike the conventionally grown ones. They appeared comparatively smaller and unpolished, too, due to the fact that no wax and any other value-added elements were valued on them.
